The History

Shortly after the turn of the century, some gear-heads who liked to ride motorcycles were sitting around having a couple of beers. They were involved with other things in their lives like families, businesses, and volunteer fire fighting. Somehow the notion of having a poker run, in conjunction with a long-running car show, seemed like a good idea. Short on help, but long on enthusiasm, they put together a local run and it turned out pretty good. People who had done the run came forward to see how they could help. A salesman who wasn’t far from retirement added his knowledge of back-road-routes and spent company time figuring various ways to interesting destinations. Family members helped with organization and promotion. Fire fighters and EMT’s volunteered to help. The Village of Saukville stepped forward with support and cooperation. Today, the Run is separated from the Car Show, but there remains a lot of crossover with the same folks working both events. The Run route is different every year. It always includes unique and often historical sights. It begins each year at Suburban Harley in Thiensville. They have supported the Run since the start with a registration tent and a vendor truck at the Run’s end in Saukville. A party with awards, raffles, music, and food is held in the Veteran’s Triangle Park in Saukville and is open to the public. It has turned into a popular family affair with proceeds going to support the Saukville Volunteer Fire Department. Each year offers something different, but the date is fixed. The third Saturday in August has become the mark on the event calendar that numerous returnees do not want to miss. So it continues to grow, but it remains rooted in small-town tradition and fun….just the way you like it.
